Georgia Natural Gas Completes Local Community
Project
To Launch “Weatherization And Conservation” Campaign
Home Project is part of Hands on Atlanta
Day
Atlanta—Georgia Natural Gas’
(GNG’s) TrueBlue Crew of employee volunteers will weatherize the
home of a Dekalb County senior on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 9 a.m. until noon as
part of the 2003 Hands On Atlanta Day. “Weatherization and conservation”
is a current campaign of GNG, which encourages all natural gas consumers to take
action to weatherize their homes to conserve energy and curb winter heating expenses.
To celebrate Hands on Atlanta Day, nearly 20 percent of GNG’s
employees have volunteered to make energy conservation improvements to the home
of Tucker resident Mildred Smith. Improvements to Smith’s single-level home
will include weather stripping exterior doors, caulking interior windows and sinks
to prevent air seepage, installing insulated electrical outlet gaskets, installing
attic stair and air conditioner covers, and installing low-flow shower heads and
faucet aerators. In addition, GNG is providing professionally installed insulation
for Ms. Smith’s basement.
“We are pleased to make these energy conservation improvements
to Ms. Smith’s home, said Mike Braswell, GNG’s Chief Operating Officer.
“This not only helps a deserving consumer, but it also demonstrates to everyone
how easy it is to make simple home improvements that save energy and money. Every
homeowner should be undertaking these same efforts now, while temperatures are
still mild.”
Since its inception, GNG has supported the Heating Energy Assistance
Team (H.E.A.T.) through annual contributions. H.E.A.T. distributes energy assistance
funds to qualified elderly and low-income residents throughout Georgia. Ms. Smith,
who is retired and qualifies for state heating assistance based on her income,
was one of several qualifying seniors initially recommended by H.E.A.T. to be
the beneficiary of GNG’s weatherization effort.
GNG is the only natural gas marketer in Georgia to consistently
offer a special discount for qualified senior citizens. In addition to receiving
a $10.50 discount off their Atlanta Gas Light Company base charge, seniors who
qualify for the GNG discount also enjoy a reduction in their gas price of at least
10 cents per therm. Information about GNG’s senior discount and energy assistance
can be found on GNG’s web site, www.onlygng.com/residential/seniors.html.
Energy Conservation Tips
There are simple ways to conserve energy that may result in
